“The Blood We Shed (to Nourish the Beast)”

This piece was created speak to the insidious nature of racism and the prison industrial complex. I has just read “The New Jim Crow” by Melissa Alexander and was intrigued by how racist structures are dismantled then come back in more covert ways. Here in Georgia, kudzu and vines take over stretches of highways, homes, and businesses. The woodcut figure is handcuffed to represent the very real nature of mass incarceration. I used screen printed kudzu vines and branches to represent how racism, though unnatural in theory, has cloaked itself as a natural part of our society and doing real damage to black bodies.
